Our Program

Reading/writing readiness

Monthly walks at the park

Decision-making, learning skills, cooperation

Bethel Cooperative Preschool is a non-profit accredited organization that complies with all federal rules and regulations in providing equal opportunites in both learning and employment. Bethel Co-op adheres to all state and federal non-discrimination laws. Our Co-op does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender or religious preference.

What curriculum do we follow?

Here at Bethel Co-op we currently follow the guidelines established by the

National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). These guidelines, known

as Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) emphasizes that children learn best through

hands-on experiences, child-initiated play activities and are individualized for each child to meet

their own developmental needs. We do not use a “canned” curriculum for our program.

Our teacher develops and plans curriculum that is designed to meet the specific developmental

needs of the enrolled children at different ages. We integrate learning across different domains

(physical, social-emotional, cognitive, language) and across subject areas. We emphasize the

importance of children’s individual development, experiences, and needs. Through our affiliation

with Bates Technical College, we have numerous resources to aid the teacher as she plans,

including monthly professional development opportunities with other co-op teachers.

Our preschool classroom is carefully planned by our teacher to provide a variety of learning

centers and interest areas that are equipped with age appropriate play materials and equipment.

For children, play is both their work and pleasure and it is an integral part of a child’s

development. These activities are provided in the classroom to help develop physical, cognitive,

social, and emotional skills in young children. The activities are planned to be age appropriate,

safe, and provide opportunity for successful participation.

Throughout the day children may participate in a variety of activities that usually include a circle

time, learning centers that include small motor, creative/art, blocks, dramatic play, sensory

materials, science, math, literacy, music, large motor, and snack time. Children are allowed to

choose activities that interest them and freely be able to explore the materials and equipment in

order to practice learning skills. Planning, problem solving, cooperative skills, and positive self-

image are strengthened during this process.

Our cooperative model integrates families into the classroom, where they work as teacher

assistants, supervising and interacting with children. Our adult to child ratio is often higher than

other preschools; 1:3 in the two-year-old class and 1:5 in the three through five-year-old

classes. Families are trained by the teacher to support the children’s learning

experiences in the classroom.

Bethel Co-op Preschool is a welcoming community of diverse families coming together to

provide a safe learning environment for children. Through our play-based philosophy, we

nurture creativity and education growth and encourage a positive social atmosphere.
